Ingredients you'll need

For the Tofu:

  • 2 blocks tofu

For the Marinade:

  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 1 tablespoon miso paste
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 nori sheet, crumbled
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fish seasoning (optional)

For the Breading:

  • 3 tablespoons flour mixed with 100ml water
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

Let's get cookin'

  1. Cut the tofu blocks into stick shapes.
  2. Score the tofu sticks crosswise to help the marinade penetrate better.
  3. For the marinade: In a bowl, mix together water, miso paste, vinegar, crumbled nori sheet, salt, and fish seasoning (if using) until well combined.
  4. Add the tofu sticks to the marinade, making sure they're well covered.
  5. Marinate for at least 45 minutes (longer is better for more flavor).
  6. For the breading: Mix flour with 100ml water to create a batter.
  7. Prepare a plate with breadcrumbs.
  8. Remove tofu sticks from the marinade and dip each one first in the flour batter, then coat thoroughly in breadcrumbs.
  9. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
  10. Fry the breaded tofu sticks until crispy and golden brown on all sides.
  11. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce (tartar sauce, vegan mayo, or lemon wedges work great!).
